What does #healthcare web apps have to do with the transport of #medical information for provider payments?
With the direction of Internet of Things (#IoT) we are transitioning into a deeper realm of telecommunications. The foundation of data transport is the Local Exchange Carriers (#LEC).
LECs are experiencing extreme fiscal challenges. We, the public, demand higher speeds for less money. What do we think happens on the back end in their business of providing us quality networks that meet our demands?
Let’s consider the data that I have shared numerous times that around 74 percent of the US population lacks the computer skills that businesses need.
This was an extremely painful experience when I was tasked to work with a team of younger workers in their 20s that were using Excel instead of using Word for what the client needed. Additionally, it was horrifying how they lacked the basic skills to use these applications. Nor did they understand how to securely #collaborate with the business entities they were serving.
“Didn’t you guys learn this in school?”
Them: *blink* *blink*
Then, they got defensive about their lack of knowledge instead of teaming up with me and asking me to teach them. Which, I would have happily and eagerly done.
This was a team of workers in the business of #telecommunications. Telecommunications has everything to do with our future. Furthermore, what do we know of E-9-1-1? #Emergency services is not some magic button. It involves #technical professionals who know what information will be transmitted the moment a person calls for help. Are we securing that information? Is the LEC? It’s the LEC that houses that proprietary and sensitive data.
Do they put their systems through rigorous testing to safeguard our information?
Let’s say that we have identified a healthcare app that would be beneficial with reaching out to isolated indigent patients. What are some of their primary challenges?
• Limb and joint mobility
• Transportation
• Emotional distress and anxiety
• Perception of professionals not listening
• Professional and public biases
• Expenses associated with transportation and care
What is ‘Meaningful Use’ incentives? It boils down to payment and the transmission of the private information for medical entities to receive reimbursement for their services.
What do we have to consider with the databases and web applications that we build?
The OSI model is the foundation that we must understand to meet requirements for secure networks and applications to protect the sensitive data of patients.
Medical information is the proprietary intellectual property of the patient and medical entities. What are the COBIT-5 standards? While investigating electronic transactions for a client, it dawned on me that some of the popular payment applications some businesses were using were not COBIT compliant. What does this mean?
This means that my financial information would not be secure with some of my business transactions with certain organizations. Remember Target and their transactions being hacked? Not once but, twice.
Knowing the OSI model can help with the development of the applications we are trying to create. It’s critical to put applications through vigorous test processes prior to deploying them for public use. If we fail at considering well planned testing processes, we fail at offering a safe harbor of the end user’s private and sensitive information. In health applications, if we’re trying to help patients, are we really helping them if their intellectual property is compromised?
The largest concern for patients is the expense of healthcare. How much worse would it be for them if their health information got hacked? Professionals have been conveying that hacking patient information has been a lucrative target. With current social challenges–is it surprising?
